Black_HatMy art is inspired by the spirit and joie de vivre of my Great Dane, Shana.  Her human gestures, personality quirks, and playfulness are a constant source of delight.  I have captured these qualities in a series of mixed-media canvases that combine ink, paint, collage, and found objects. These whimsical images with sassy titles are not only intended to strike the funny bone of the viewer but also suggest the need to personify these furry companions in an increasingly alienated society.
I reside in New York City where costumed dogs have packed social calendars. In this urban landscape plagued by loneliness, more and more people are choosing dogs as their companion. These tail-waggers who possess an undying loyalty and irrepressible willingness to please are a comforting presence as I along with my fellow New Yorkers navigate our way through the obstacle course of life.
In lieu of my signature, I affix a plastic fly to each canvas as my artistic calling card.  The fly is both a synecdoche for my wish to be a “fly on the wall” and a vanitas symbol alluding to the transience of life.  Ironically, this poignant truth enables me to live in the moment and take risks particularly in my artwork.
